Support carbon Solutions

Nature-Based Solutions

Help combat climate change by leveraging ecosystems to absorb carbon, regulate temperatures, and reduce disaster risks. Actions like reforestation, wetland restoration, and sustainable agriculture enhance carbon sequestration, improve biodiversity, and protect communities from extreme weather. These solutions provide cost-effective, long-term climate resilience while benefiting both people and the planet.

Engineered Solutions

Help combat climate change by using technology and infrastructure to reduce emissions and capture carbon. Innovations like carbon capture and storage (CCS), and enhanced rock weathering (ERW) lower greenhouse gas levels and mitigate extreme weather effects. These solutions provide scalable, efficient, and often high-tech approaches to building a more sustainable future.

Description

Project Goals & Achievements

  • Climate Impact: The project prevented the emission of millions of tons of CO₂e by halting deforestation and forest degradation.

  • Biodiversity Conservation: Protects critical habitats for 16 endangered species, including the Asian Elephant, Sun Bear, Pileated Gibbon, and Hairy-nosed Otter.

  • Community Benefits: Supports alternative income sources, ecotourism, and training programs for local communities.

  • Law Enforcement: Funds 134 forest rangers and a 33-member anti-poaching unit to prevent illegal activities in protected areas.

Project Activities

  1. Forest Conservation & Law Enforcement – Establishing and expanding ranger stations to prevent deforestation and illegal logging.

  2. Community-Based Ecotourism – Developing sustainable tourism, attracting over 23,000 visitors, and generating income for local communities.

  3. Training & Employment – Educating farmers on sustainable agriculture and employing locals in conservation efforts.

  4. Education & Health Support – Providing scholarships and improved healthcare services to local communities.

  5. Carbon Credit Generation – Selling REDD+ carbon credits to finance climate mitigation and conservation efforts.

Key Sustainable Development Contributions

  • UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The project aligns with 15 SDGs, including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), clean water (SDG 6), and poverty reduction (SDG 1).

  • Improved Livelihoods: Over 10,000 people have benefited from job opportunities, training, and better land-use practices.

  • Water & Health Access: Ensured clean drinking water for 27,516 people and improved healthcare for over 2,200 individuals.

Conclusion

The Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project is a high-impact conservation initiative that has successfully reduced emissions, protected biodiversity, and improved community livelihoods. The project continues to provide significant environmental and socio-economic benefits, supporting Cambodia’s commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.
